Ice Pack Therapy

Ice TherapyThe ice therapy is an important part of the rehabilitation of an inflamed area. The ice serves three purposes:

1. Reduced the swelling of injured tissues
2.Tighten the ligaments that hold the joints together
3. Reduce pain

Wrap a paper towel around the ice pack, then apply ice directly to the area for every other 20 minutes for four consecutive hours. Rest completely for two hours with no ice. After the initial treatment, repeat ice therapy for 20 minutes every two waking hours.

Avoid sitting for disc and sacroiliac problems. The seated position puts a larger strain on the lower spine that is in the process of healing. Lie down unless otherwise directed.

Initial contact with ice will be cold, followed by a tingling sensation, followed by a burning sensation and finally numbness. These are all normal reactions. Do Not Be Alarmed. Never leave ice on bare skin or on for a period longer than 20 minutes.
